We exchanged a blog post with WEtell because we think our communities should know about each other. So we asked WEtell to write about themselves.
Mobile communications have a fairness and sustainability problem
The awareness of sustainability in the digital world is comparable to a climate-neutral car. We urgently need it, but unfortunately it is not available. With 15kg of CO2 emissions per year and SIM card, your mobile phone does not make much of an impact. But if we take all 151 million active SIM cards in Germany together, mobile phones emit 2.4 million tons of CO2 every year. That is roughly equivalent to domestic air traffic in Germany.
It took us a long time to collect this data. We sat down, looked at studies and did a lot of calculations, because it's not even in your provider's terms and conditions.
You should read them anyway. Among other things, you will find important information there such as contract periods and prices, or that your personal data may be passed on to third parties for evaluation. By "third parties" we do not mean artificial teeth, but companies that send you advertising because they have bought or borrowed your data.
Real sustainability in the mobile communications industry? Unfortunately, this is largely absent. Fairness and data protection? These are also mostly sought in vain.
How does fair and sustainable mobile communications work?
“Avoid – Recover – Promote Energy Transition” is WEtell’s golden rule.
This includes the use of refurbished equipment and the supply of green electricity to the offices. Services such as web servers, email programs and printing are of course climate-neutral. We recover carbon by extracting biochar. In Germany, coal is pressed from organic waste, which is then buried in the ground and thus permanently binds CO2. In this way, we recover all the CO2 that is generated by our business operations and our customers' tariffs. And thirdly: our solar systems. Together with naturstrom and ecosia, we have had solar systems built in Germany. In this way, we are driving forward the energy transition and are therefore even more than climate-neutral - climate-positive, so to speak.
When you use your mobile phone to make calls and surf the internet, so much data is generated that, taken together, it tells a novel about you. For example, it is possible to track where you are, which websites you visit, or who you communicate with. WEtell keeps personal data and detailed data on mobile phone behavior separate: the mobile operator does not know your name, WEtell does not know your surfing behavior. We do not sell or monetize customer data for advertising purposes - not even anonymously.
All WEtell tariffs can be canceled monthly. After all, we want to convince you and not take you by surprise! To ensure that the tariff always remains up to date, WEtell also implements tariff upgrades for existing customers and if you have any questions, the in-house service team is always available to help you.
So that you can understand and read everything, WEtell has a sustainability transparency report in the form of a common good balance sheet Here the company provides a detailed insight on 112 pages.
More sustainable mobile telephony for private and business customers
We all use mobile communications every day. By switching to a sustainable provider, you can make your everyday life super easy and more sustainable in the long term. And that also applies to your professional life. Companies play an important role in bringing sustainability into our everyday lives and letting it take root there. After all, we always hang the supply chains of the companies we buy from around our necks, whether we want to or not. So introduce WEtell to your bosses and the bosses of all the companies you buy from and see what they say about it.
economic transformation
At WEtell, it's not just about selling as many tariffs as possible. It's about selling as many tariffs as possible to promote sustainability and shake up the mobile communications industry. The more people switch to a sustainable provider, the more we show the big providers that they have to follow suit. And not just in 2045 and not just in the area of climate protection, but also in terms of data protection and, last but not least, customer relationships on an equal footing.
So what can you do?
It's very simple for you: If you want to make climate-friendly and fair mobile phone calls, then take a look at our tariffs. Ordering takes 5 minutes and we'll help you cancel your contract with your previous provider and also port your phone number.
There is even a special price for the WECHANGE community: With the code WECHANGE you will receive a €25 credit OR WEtell will invest €40 in solar modules.
Of course you can also use our link Copy it into an email and send it with the subject "Are you already broadcasting green?" to the most sustainable company you think exists. If this company is WEtell, then you can of course save yourself the email😊
