  • About the Project

This global Project, “Reorienting Education and Training Systems to Improve the Lives of Indigenous and Marginalized Youth” will generate academic research into how schools and formal education systems could better meet the education needs of the Indigenous and marginalized youth in traditional communities. The Project will develop recommendations to assist education leaders worldwide and disseminate them through a wide variety of networks including UN sites, Indigenous leaders and ministries of education to improve the overall quality of individual and community well-being for the target groups. Furthermore, the first international research network on Sustainable Development Goal 4.5 will be created.
The researchers, working with schools and community leaders will explore both altering curricula content and pedagogical approaches to more effectively engage the students and deliver a useful quality education. The Project is led by the UNESCO Chair on Reorienting Teacher Education in Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability at York University, Toronto, Canada yet spans approximately 30 countries on five continents. The Project, is aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8, 11 and 16 as well as Education 2030.
Commenced in 2017, the Project will continue until 2020. Funding to hold the planning meetings to build consensus upon project processes, structures and to discuss regional specifics is guaranteed. Further funding is being sought to carry out the local and regional research projects.
