Colonial Continuities: Spotlight on...

“Climate activism” or Klimagerechtigkeit seems to have become a rallying point for many people organising around issues of ecology especially in the Global North. With the rise of trans-regional movements like Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion in recent years, not only have we witnessed renewed urgency regarding questions centered around ecology, but also around how they relate to questions of (social) justice, and inequalities. What are some of the contradictions which emerge from mainstream climate activism: specifically around matters of decolonisation, race and racism, class, gender, and intergenerational collaboration? How might one think through some of these contradictions? How might one learn from the insights of marginalised persons and groups (both in regional contexts, as well as in global ones)? What are some of the new questions and challenges which emerge from our collective reflections on the failures and successes of recent climate activism? As a participant-observer of social movements, Mihir Sharma will explore some of these questions in depth, and invite participants to contribute their insights and questions towards a dialogue beginning with the aforementioned prompts.
